You need a heat press. That’s it. No special ink, no film, no chemicals, no pretreatment. Just a flat heat press with accurate temperature control and consistent platen pressure. Here’s what to know before you buy or before you press your first order.

Not all heat presses are equal. These are the three specs that determine whether your results are consistent or frustrating:

Temperature Accuracy

Your press must reach and hold the correct temperature. A press that runs 20 degrees cooler than it reads will produce poor adhesion. Test your press with a non-contact thermometer if you're getting inconsistent results.

Platen Pressure Consistency

Uneven pressure across the platen is the leading cause of lifted edges after washing. Test by pressing a piece of carbon paper or tissue paper across the full platen and check for even contact.

Platen Size

For full-front or full-back chest prints, a 15"x15" platen is the standard minimum. A 16"x20" gives you more coverage for larger designs without repositioning.

You don’t need an $800 professional press to get started. A reliable 15″x15″ clamshell press in the $150–$300 range will produce excellent results on standard cotton and blend garments. Every fabric type has a slightly different heat tolerance. Using the wrong temperature on polyester, for example, can scorch or dye-migrate the fabric. Use the table below as your definitive guide. When in doubt, start at the lower end of the temperature range and work up.

Neck Labels — Different Settings — IMPORTANT

Neck labels use a COLD peel method — the opposite of standard DTF transfers. Do not peel a neck label while it is hot. Allow it to cool completely before peeling or it will lift and fail. Follow these specific instructions for every neck label application.

IMPORTANT WARNING: Never use the hot peel method on neck labels. Peeling while hot will cause the label to lift off the fabric and the adhesion will fail. When in doubt — let it cool completely.

Remove moisture and wrinkles before anything else.

Place your garment flat on the heat press platen and press for 3–5 seconds with no transfer. This removes moisture trapped in the fabric and eliminates any wrinkles that could create uneven contact. Skipping this step is the single most common cause of adhesion failure. The garment should feel warm and completely smooth before
you place your transfer.

Place your transfer face-down on the garment.

The printed side of your transfer faces DOWN toward the fabric. The carrier film (the clear or matte backing) faces UP toward the platen. Position your design exactly where you want it. Use a ruler or placement tool if precise alignment matters. Once you close the press, there’s no adjusting. See the Placement Guide section below for standard positioning measurements by print location.

Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the transfer.

Placing a protective cover sheet over your transfer protects the carrier film from direct platen contact and helps distribute heat evenly. It also keeps your platen clean over time. A Teflon sheet is reusable and preferred for production use. Parchment paper works perfectly well for lower-volume pressing. This step is especially recommended for polyester fabrics to reduce direct heat contact.

Using the settings table in Section 3, set your heat press to the correct temperature and timer for your fabric type. Allow your press to fully reach temperature before pressing — most presses take 3–5 minutes to heat up fully. Do not press until the temperature indicator shows your
target temp is stable.

Close the press fully and hold for the full timer duration.

Apply firm, even pressure across the full platen surface and close the press completely. Do not lift, shift, or peek during the press. Consistent pressure for the full timer duration is what bonds the adhesive to the fabric fibers. Partial pressure or lifting early are the two most common causes of edge peeling after washing.

Hot peel immediately. Smooth. Let cool. Done.

When the timer ends, open the press and peel the carrier film immediately — this is the hot peel. Grab a corner of the carrier film and peel smoothly and steadily at a low angle across the design. Do not peel straight up. Peel within 3 seconds of opening the press. If the transfer looks perfect, you’re done. If you see any areas that didn’t fully adhere, place parchment paper over the transfer and re-press for 5–10 seconds.

PRO TIP: Your first press on a new garment style or a new fabric is always a test press. Use a scrap piece or an old garment to dial in your settings before you run your full order. One test press saves you from reprinting an entire production run.

Hot Peel vs. Cold Peel

This Is the One Thing You Cannot Get Backwards.

DTF transfers and neck labels use different peel methods. Using the wrong one will ruin your application. Here’s everything you need to know.

What It Means: Hot peel means you peel the carrier film immediately after opening the press — while the transfer is still hot. The adhesive is at its most pliable state right after pressing, which allows the film to release cleanly from the printed surface without disturbing the design.

When to Do It: Within 3 seconds of opening the press. Don’t wait. Don’t let it cool. Peel immediately.

How to Do It: Grip one corner of the carrier film and peel smoothly at a low angle — nearly parallel to the garment surface. Pull steadily and confidently. Hesitating or stopping mid-peel can cause the design to lift with the film.

What Happens If You Wait: If you let a hot-peel transfer cool before peeling, the adhesive re-bonds to the carrier film instead of fully bonding to the fabric. The result is a hazy, ghosted, or dull finish — and in some cases, the design may partially pull off with the film.

What It Means: Cold peel means you wait until the carrier film has cooled completely to room temperature before peeling. Specialty DTF Transfers use a different adhesive formulation than standard DTF transfers, and that adhesive needs time to fully cure before the film is removed.

When to Do It: After the garment has fully cooled — typically 60–90 seconds after pressing. Do not rush. If the carrier film feels warm to the touch, wait longer.

What Happens If You Peel Hot: Peeling it while it is still hot will cause the label to lift off the fabric — either partially or completely. The adhesive has not had time to cure, and the transfer will not be wash-resistant if peeled too early.

Troubleshooting

Every problem has a cause. Every cause has a fix. Run through this guide before you reach out — most issues are solved in under a minute.

The good news: almost every pressing problem is caused by one of five things — temperature, time, pressure, moisture, or peel timing. Identify which variable is off and you’ll solve the problem on the next press.

Problem: Transfer not sticking at all

Cause: Temperature too low, press time too short, or moisture in the garment

Fix: Pre-press garment 5 seconds to remove moisture. Increase temp by 5–10 degrees. Extend press time by 2–3 seconds. Ensure press is fully up to temp before pressing.

Problem: Transfer edges lifting after washing

Cause: Insufficient pressure, press time too short, or garment was not pre-pressed
Fix: Increase platen pressure. Pre-press garment to remove moisture. Add 2 seconds to press time. Re-press with parchment paper for 8–10 seconds on lifted edges.

Problem: Colors look dull, faded, or washed out after pressing

Cause: Temperature too high (burning the inks), or pressing too long
Fix: Reduce temperature by 10–15 degrees. Reduce press time by 2 seconds. If color shift persists, check that your file was submitted in RGB color mode.

Problem: Ghosting or double image visible after peeling

Cause: Transfer moved during pressing, or waited too long before hot peeling
Fix: Ensure transfer is fully flat and not shifting before closing the press. Peel immediately after opening — within 3 seconds. Any movement during the press will produce a ghost image.

Problem: Carrier film tearing during peel

Cause: Temperature too high, or peeling at too steep an angle
Fix: Peel at a lower, flatter angle — nearly parallel to the garment. If film is consistently tearing, reduce temperature by 5–10 degrees. Always peel from a corner, not the middle.

Problem: Transfer bubbling or wrinkling after pressing

Cause: Moisture in the garment, or garment had wrinkles before pressing
Fix: Always pre-press 3–5 seconds before applying transfer. Smooth out garment completely on platen before placing transfer. Ensure there are no folds or seams under the design area.

Problem: Transfer cracking or peeling after washing

Cause: Temperature too low during application, or garment not cared for correctly
Fix: Confirm press temperature with a non-contact thermometer — many presses read inaccurately. Re-press at correct settings. Share care instructions with customer: wash inside out, cold water, no bleach, low heat dry.

Problem: Neck label lifting off after pressing

Cause: Peeled before fully cooled (hot peel used on a cold peel product)
Fix: Neck labels require COLD peel only. Allow to cool fully (60–90 seconds) before peeling. Re-apply at 300°F, 10–12 seconds, firm pressure, then allow to fully cool before peeling.

Problem: Colors on polyester look discolored or bleed into design

Cause: Dye migration — pressing at too high a temperature on polyester

Fix: Reduce temperature to 250–275°F for 100% polyester. Dye migration is permanent and cannot be reversed. Always test on a scrap piece of the same fabric before running a full order.

Problem: Design looks perfect but washes out after first wash

Cause: Press temp too low, time too short, or garment not cared for correctly
Fix: Check and confirm all press settings with a thermometer. Re-press a fresh transfer at correct settings. Provide customer with written care instructions. If issue persists, contact us within 7 days — Warrior Standard Guarantee covers manufacturing defects.
